Chapter Nine

TIMOTHY WILEY WHIRLED AROUND, expecting to see Admiral Nechayev’s head disintegrate from a disruptor blast. But Henry Fulton could only gape at the admiral, dumbstruck by the order she had just given to destroy the saucer and everyone aboard it.

“Shields up!” shouted Wiley. “Fire phasers!”

The woman on Tactical pounded her console, and there was a high-pitched whine as she unleashed the saucer’s phasers against the hull section. The viewscreen overhead crackled with static and went dark, replaced by a view of the hull section listing dramatically.

“Direct hit!” cried the officer.

Only then did Wiley turn his attention to Henry Fulton. “Don’t kill her!” he said. “She’s still valuable.”

Fulton glared at the man who was again giving the orders, and his grip tightened on the disruptor pistol pressed against Nechayev’s head. Suddenly, he swung the weapon and bashed her across the back of the skull; she slumped to the deck, unconscious.

“Helm, evasive maneuvers!” ordered Wiley, striding across the bridge. “Tactical, order the Shufola to engage them, too!”

“Yes, sir!”
